Employees at Pimlico Plumbers are being asked to reveal their salaries to the nation as they take part in a new documentary on Channel 4.

Show Me Your Money sees managing director Charlie Mullins tackle the controversial issue of wages and ask his workforce to pin up their pay for all their workmates to see.

Scheduled to air next week, the programme is inspired by a real pay experiment from the 1950's to see how exposing salary discrepancies affects individual performance.

Mullins admitted that taking part in an experiment where employees reveal their salary to each other was always going to be a risky strategy.

“At Pimlico Plumbers we have always prided ourselves on being 100% transparent in everything we do, so when Channel 4 approached me with this idea I jumped at the chance as employees salaries was the only area that did not live up to this,” said the self-made millionaire.

Mullins rises to the challenge with surprising results as his staff engage in work swaps and negotiations to better understand their colleagues and suggest a new, fairer pay scheme for all while keeping the wage bill at £8m.

Channel 4's commissioning editor Sara Ramsden said: "Some people think the last taboo is sex; others believe the last taboo is death, when in actual fact it is sharing with the person next to you just how much your salary is. For the first time on TV, this extraordinary experiment lifts the lid on the unfairness that exists in every single workplace in Britain."

Show Me Your Money airs on Wednesday 11 July at 10pm on Channel 4.
