The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland has upheld an OFTEC complaint that Calor Gas made misleading energy-savings claims in its latest campaign.

In the ruling published earlier this week (2 July), the ASAI considered that the method of calculation chosen by Calor Gas, and the exclusion of an unavoidable cost when selecting LPG, were likely to exploit the lack of knowledge of consumers. ASAI demanded that Calor Gas withdraw the misleading advertising with immediate effect.

David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland, said: “This is a small but important victory for householders across Ireland who often are marketed heavily with energy-saving claims that are contrary to the independent data available. We believe it’s in the best interests of consumers and the industry that all energy companies behave responsibly and are brought to account when they do not.

“In this tough economic environment, householders are looking for ways to make energy savings and are entitled to be given fair and independent data when researching fuel costs. We are delighted with today’s ruling.”

This is the second complaint that OFTEC has made to ASAI against the LPG company in the last 12 months. A previous complaint in 2012 led to Calor Gas removing an incorrect cost calculator from its website.
