Six retro South Yorkshire council houses are being given eco-friendly makeovers worth £150,000.

Six retro South Yorkshire council houses are being given eco-friendly makeovers worth £150,000 in an effort to highlight the benefits of energy-efficient living.

Built in the 1930s, two blocks of three traditional council homes in Brampton Bierlow, Rotherham, will be renovated over the next few weeks.

Solar panels will be fitted to the houses, as well as thick insulation fitted on top of the old brickwork, which the Centre for Alternative Technology said could reduce the nation's carbon emissions by 50%.

The stock and planning manager said of the project: "Tenants are really going to benefit with huge cuts in fuel bills."
