A study by RatedPeople.com has revealed that British homeowners used the wet weather over the August bank holiday to carry out home improvement jobs.

RatedPeople.com recorded a 15% increase in jobs year on year from the last bank holiday. Over the 2014 August bank holiday, plumbing jobs were the most popular taking an 11% share of all jobs posted, with painting and decorating and roofing taking a 9% share, and building and carpentry at 8%.

Chris Burke, director of Insight at RatedPeople.com, said: "We usually see a spike in job postings during long weekends, as British homeowners use the extra time off to carry out home improvements. This year, we had 15% more job postings compared to the same holiday period in 2013, which included un-seasonally high volumes of requests for heating engineers, plumbers and roofers – largely due to the adverse weather conditions we experienced.

"Britons were also busy conducting larger home improvement jobs this August Bank Holiday, with plumbing jobs taking an 11% share of all job requests. The demand for loft conversion jobs increased by 55 per cent this weekend compared to last year, while conservatory specialist requests were up by 38% - highlighting a need for more living space without moving home."
