Win a free wireless charging system, including the charger, the battery and an 18v drill from Bosch.

Bosch introduces its wireless charging system, designed to relieve concerns professional power-tool users may have about charging their equipment and the negative impact this could have on their jobs.

Loss of productivity through flat power tool batteries could be a thing of the past, says Bosch Professional Powertools, thanks to its latest product development.

The wireless charging system has been designed to harness the advantages of inductive energy transfer to keep cordless tools power-ready. This new approach is similar in principle to that of a contactless toothbrush charging station, says the company.

Aimed at professionals operating in fixed locations, the idea is that whenever the tool is not being used it should be placed on the charging unit in the user’s work station. Tools can be left on the charger indefinitely or placed there for just a few minutes at a time between jobs.

Key advantages

The system’s main benefit is that jobs are not interrupted, delayed by lack of charge or, worse still, end up in a search for a charged-up replacement battery. However, there are other advantages. Savings can be made on battery costs, as only one is needed for the tool. The expense of repairing or replacing equipment damaged by water and dust is also avoided, as there are no vulnerable electrical contact points.

“We understand the problems facing professional power tool users and are always looking for new ways of solving them,” said Steve Hillier, marketing director, Bosch Professional Power Tools.

“A particular issue we’ve identified is a form of stress that we call ‘charge anxiety’, where workers and their employers worry tasks may be made more difficult, and valuable time may be lost, through the charge running out at the wrong moment. With our wireless charging system, we can alleviate that concern and help to ensure non-stop productive action,” he added.

For the system’s UK launch, Bosch has developed two products, the GAL 1,830w professional battery charger and the GBA 18v 2.0ah MW-B ;professional lithium-ion battery. The compact charging kit comes with a mounting frame for convenient attachment to benches or shelves, which serves as a flexible but secure holder for the charger, battery and tool, says the company.

The smart system detects the battery state and selects the optimum charging mode, so there is no risk of overcharging. CoolPack technology helps improve heat dissipation and extend the battery’s lifetime. Further flexibility results from the system’s compatibility with all 18v Bosch power tools, including drill/drivers, multi-cutters, rotary hammers, impact drivers and combis.

“Those who stand to gain most from this new technology include small furniture and woodworking businesses, bespoke joineries, electrical companies and plants making vehicles, for example, on assembly lines,” said Mr Hillier.

“Standing the tool on the charger whenever there’s a gap in a job will become a natural part of the work flow, and continuous availability of power can be assured. There will be no worries over the safety of the charging equipment, even in wet or dusty work stations.

“In addition, there will be no need to buy, charge, store, seek or swap spare batteries, as only one battery is required and it remains in the tool even when charging,” he concluded.
