Swansea Council's Corporate Building and Property Services Team will soon be advertising for candidates to fill 12 apprenticeship positions, including plumbers.

Martin Nicholls, the head of the building and property services team, said: "The intake of the new recruits in the autumn means about 10% of the tradesmen and tradeswomen will be apprentices. Since the scheme began eight years ago, the new intake will mean over 100 people have learned tricks of the trade because of it. That's something we're very proud of."

Jobs for the apprentices once their training is complete could include anything from fixing facilities at tourist hotspots to working on new buildings across the Swansea area.

The Council's Corporate Building and Property Services team has a workforce of about 340 fully-qualified tradesmen and tradeswomen.

The successful candidates will spend four days a week being mentored by qualified staff with the other day a week being spent in college. Apprentices will either get an NVQ Level 2 or an NVQ Level 3 qualification depending on which trade they choose to learn, and training lasts either two or three years respectively.

The new apprenticeship positions will be advertised at the end of July.
