Robin Thom, director of sustainability at Green Heat and SAPRatings.com, was named Consultant of the Year and was highly commended in the Energy Efficiency Champion 2017 category during the West Midlands Regional Energy Efficiency & Healthy Homes Awards.

The 2017 Regional Energy Consultant of the Year Award rewards an individual or company in each of the 11 regional areas around the UK that advises businesses or homeowners about energy efficiency savings and measures through a Green Deal or EPC energy assessment.

Robin said: "Awards such as these are really important in keeping energy efficiency high on the agenda and are encouraging for the people and organisations at the forefront of implementing better energy solutions."

Nominees had to demonstrate clear energy savings were achieved in their work. Taking into consideration the nature, scale and scope of the work carried out, a special emphasis was placed on successful integration of local or national Government energy efficiency schemes in the nominee's projects.

Over the past year, Robin has started several projects including a proposed A-rated hotel in Clerkenwell, for which he provided specialist planning advice to satisfy the Mayor of London's Climate Change Plan. He also highlighted solutions to achieve building regulations compliance, as well as reviewing BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes Assessments for the site.

In Coventry, Robin, together with timber frame specialists BuildaKit, helped local property developer Mike Vining create four A-rated new homes - these are four of only 100 A-rated houses out of 63,474 in Coventry.

These homes are now in the top 1% of energy efficiency ratings across the UK. This was achieved using super insulated fabric, high efficiency heating systems and controls and an A-rated high efficiency gas heating and solar thermal hot water system with new smart controls and underfloor heating.
